NASA Logo (University of North Carolina at Greensboro)

The initial logo was created in November 2018. It is a turtle adorned in UNCG Navy and UNCG Gold. The arrows represent the turtle's connection to Native Peoples' understanding of Mother Earth, and Turtle Island represents North America. These arrows also represent our connection to each other. The turtle's shell, or the circle, includes the medicine wheel representing the four directions and stages of life, among other things, with the colors red, yellow, black, and white. The shapes inside of that are eagle feathers which represent the highest honor among our people as the eagle flies the highest toward the Creator to carry our prayers. Lastly, the four connected dogwoods to represent not only North Carolina's beloved flower, but the dogwood trees that line College Avenue at UNCG.

The original logo was created in 2018 using Adobe Illustrator. I scanned the drawing, smoothed the outline, and filled the logo in with color. I wasn't as experienced with Illustrator back then.

Almost one year later, in October 2019, I created a cleaner version of the logo that was on-brand with UNCG's new brand guide. With more experience in Illustrator, I created this beauty using only the shape, pen, and color tools. I cannot remember if my decision to design a new logo was based on a request or something I concluded needed to happen.

I saw a need for words to accompany our turtle, especially since NASA didn't have much representation in the past---there were not many Native-identifying students until 2016, which is when I started. After being given various options, this combination mark (emblem-style mark even) was chosen by UNCG NASA. You will find that sometimes the club uses only the turtle for their advertising.
